As part of the Ackmann & Dickenson company culture, our team constantly shares knowledge and new ideas. Sometimes that knowledge comes in the form of a simple Slack message, other times it’s a conversation with colleagues over lunch. However, A&D Web Developer Allyson Wehrs takes that knowledge sharing to the next level, hosting monthly women in tech meetups to give web developers a comfortable environment to learn and network.
The most recent meetup, held Aug. 15, included 15 women who received an introduction to WordPress and a keynote speech from Minnesota-based designer and developer Lucy Lamp. Lucy spoke on the challenges of being a woman in tech.
“The tech world belongs to all of us,” Lucy said.
She talked about her journey into WordPress, and underscored the negative impact of external expectations and traditional definitions of success. “We are bombarded with expectations from our family and peers, but the most important question to ask ourselves is, ‘What’s your success?’
The main takeaway Lucy wanted to impart was that everyone’s goals and expectations are unique and should be true to themselves — not others. She also said in life, you sometimes realize you’ve “gotten on the wrong bus,” and that’s OK, too. The important part is landing on your feet and answering the question, “OK, what do I do now?”
In addition to some broader life lessons, Lucy demonstrated how to set up a WordPress instance — or a single installation of WordPress — and members shared their experience with SEO, video hosting and Gutenberg. Discussion on the group’s latest WordPress learnings rounded out the evening. “Everyone seemed to really enjoy themselves,” Allyson said. “We’re excited about the next meetup.”
Next month, the group discussion will center on attendees’ most useful WordPress learning resources — like tools and plugins they use daily.
